What the Job Actually Involves

A real egress install is: excavating a code-sized well outside, cutting a 20-by-40-plus-inch opening through 8 inches of concrete or block with a concrete saw, supporting the wall around the cut, setting and sealing the window square and level, building the well walls, connecting drainage, backfilling, and grading. Then the permit and the inspection. It is two skilled trades — concrete cutting and window setting — plus excavation.

Where DIY Goes Wrong

The cut. A concrete saw kicks, binds, and throws dust and slurry. Cutting a foundation wall freehand without experience risks a crooked opening, a cracked wall, or a trip to the emergency room. This is the step that injures people.

The size. We regularly see DIY windows that miss the code minimums — the opening measured as the frame instead of the clear opening, or the sill an inch too high. An inch is a failed inspection and a re-cut.

The drainage. The most-skipped step. A well with no drain works fine until the first big storm, then it becomes a pond against your foundation. Fixing it later means re-digging the well.

The permit. Fairfax County requires a permit for the structural cut. Unpermitted structural work is a resale problem waiting to happen.

When DIY Can Make Sense

Fairness matters: if you are an experienced concrete cutter with the saws, the shoring knowledge, and a helper — and you pull the permit and build to the code minimums — you can do this. A straight window replacement (same opening, new window) is also far more DIY-friendly than a new cut.

The Honest Math

Price the saw rental, the diamond blades, the window, the well materials, the gravel, the drain pipe, the permit fee, and two full days of your time — then price the risk of a failed inspection or a cracked wall. For most homeowners, the professional install costs less than the DIY job done twice. Our installation service includes the permit handling, the code-sized cut, and the drainage — in one to two days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tools would I need to DIY an egress window?

At minimum: a concrete cut-off saw with diamond blades, a rotary hammer, shoring for the opening, excavation tools, and safety gear (silica dust protection is not optional). Most homeowners do not own these, and the rentals add up fast.

Is replacing an existing egress window a DIY job?

Much more so than cutting a new opening. If the opening already meets code, swapping the window is a standard window-replacement skill level. If the old window never met code, the opening needs to change — and that is the hard part.
